Although the day, also called All Fools' Day, has been celebrated for several centuries by different cultures, its exact origins remain a mystery.  Some historians speculate that April Fools' Day dates back to 1582, when France switched from the Julian calendar to the Gregorian calendar.  People who were slow to get the news or failed recognize that start of the new year had moved to January 1st and continued to celebrate it on April 1st became the butt of jokes and hoaxes.  

Some newspapers, magazines and other published media report fake stories, which are usually explained the next day or below the news section in small letters.  Although popular since the 19th century, the day is not a public holiday.
