What is a "Junk Journal"?

On my last post, I mentioned I would explain what a "Junk Journal", which I plan to do.  First, I would like to show you what I did with the left over pieces from the 2017 Calendar I made.  I took the left over pieces and glued it onto a 9" X 12" manilla envelope, then folded it in half to create the cover for the book.

Here is the inside.  I glued a piece of cardstock to the inside to make the cover a little sturdier.  I will eventually add my signatures to the book.  

Now onto Junk Journals.  

A junk journal is a journal made out of junk.   Not really junk, but left over papers to make signatures for the inside of the book.  You can use left over scrapbook papers, cardstock, envelopes, magazine pages, painted papers, et cetera.  The cover can also be made out of left over materials as this one here.  The covers were made from a cereal box and covered with calendar pages.  I used scrapbook paper for the spine.

Here are some of the pages in the book:

On the left, I took some left over scrapbook paper, punch one side to give it decorative edge and glued it in place.  On the right I added a pock and some tags I  made from left over scrapbook paper.

On this page, I decorated a strip of scrapbook paper as I did with the picture above and glued on three sides creating a pocket.  The picture is a transfer.

the page on the left is scrapbook paper.  On the right it is a magazine page.  I stapled a doily folded in half to create a pocket and added a tag, again made of left over scrapbook paper.

On the left of this page, I made a belly band and added a miniature book.

When I had all my signatures together, I sewed them to the cover and Voila!  I was going to add beads to the strings, but then decided not too.  I need to cut them off. 

So, making a Junk Journal is really quite easy 

and a great way to use up all those left over scraps we all have laying around.

"2017"

I am a bit late posting on my blog for the New Year 2017.  I cannot believe that we are already more than half way through the year, can you?  Amazing how quickly time flies when you are not looking.  

Not is all lost, however.  I have been creating and creating and having fun in the process. Because I am behind on my posting, I thought I would post all past pictures on what I have up to until I am back on track and all caught up.  Hopefully, from that point on I can post weekly and maybe sometimes bi-weekly on thing going on in my part of the world.

I hope you enjoy and leave a comment and I will be glad to answer any questions how I created my pieces.

I started the new year by making a 4" X 6" calendar to help me keep track of my days, which I've already stated are flying by way too quickly.  This was a fun project and went together quickly.  I found some scrapbook paper that had all the months neatly outlined and all I had to do was cut them out and glue them on decorative paper.

As you can see, I was able to use the same scrapbook paper more than once.

Envelopes

Can you guess what these are?

These are envelopes made from magazines.

I made an envelope template, scanned it into my computer and used it to make these envelopes.  I can manipulate the template to  make the envelopes different sizes.

I stacked the pages in my printer and printed the template on each one.  Then I cut them out, folded them, glued them together and Viola!  I even added double-sided tape to the flap closure.

It was fun seeing where the images would land once printed on the magazine page.  I tried to use pages that had more pictures and less advertisements.  I think, so far, I have made about thirty of them.

Envelope Journal

Note Journal

In the beginning of the month I posted a Sketch Journal inspired by Cat Hand.  

This journal was made with a 9" X 6" Manilla Envelope.  I used the same process as with the other journal, but this time I covered the outside of the envelope with text pages.  I had these Chili Pepper napkins and used those over the text pages.

I cut the bottom end of the the envelope before covering the inside and outside.  The inside is covered with red cardstock.  The note journal now has an open end pocket and the other pocket closes.

I used a pamphlet stitch to sew in the pages.

Here is the flap that folds over the book to close it.

The size of this book is a perfect size to fit inside your purse.

Secret Garden/The Way Home

Here is my Artisan Series Journal inspired by JenofEveDesigns.

I bought her Bundle 3 "Printable" Vintage Mini Albums here, and combined the "Secret Garden" and The Way Home Printables to make this Journal.

Front Cover

This is the inside front cover and first page.  The printables came from some painting she had done.

Journaling page to the left and one of the coin envelopes included in the collection.

The coin envelope has a small keepsake envelope inside of it and on the right are journaling cards, which i put inside the pocket page included in the printable.

On the left side is the back side of the coin envelope and on the right side is the pocket page.  I matched the two, so the road looked liked it continued on.  I think I did a pretty good job of matching the two.

Back Cover

I enjoyed making this journal.  Watching JenofEve's videos made it easy to put the journal together.  To sew the journal together, I used a coptic stitch binding.  

Cloth Paper Scissores

About a week or two ago, I was in Michael's browsing.  When I got up to the check-out line, what should happen to catch my eye?

The Spring issue of Cloth Paper Scissors Zen Doodle workshop.  I thought I missed the issue.  What was even more surprising, I was in it!

Envelope Journal

Sketch Journal

Awhile back, Cat Hand made a journal from a white 9" X 12" Envelope using music sheets, napkins, and scrapbook paper.  So, I thought I'd give it a try.  I first must say, the first one I did was a disaster!!!  I ended up throwing it away, because it turned out so bad.  I mean really bad.

But!  I thought I'd give it one more try.  Here is my version.

The inside front.  

I used scrapbook paper for the inside liners and sketch book paper for the signature.  I reinforced the inside by gluing a piece of cardstock to the inside of the envelope. This made the cover much sturdier.

The inside back cover. 

I made my own envelope closure with the left over scrapbook paper and some brads and yellow bakers twine.

Now I have a secret compartment to keep all my finds and treasures.
